Lee Bridge and Icknield Port Road junction - phase 3

Lee Bridge and Icknield Port Road junction (phase 3) covers the section of the A457 west of City Hospital to Summerfield Park. These works involve significant highway improvements and junction enhancements on a section of the A457 Dudley Road (between Icknield Port Road/Winson Green Road junction and Western Road). The works also encompass highway and footway realignment over Lee Bridge.

Phase 3 includes the following improvements:

  • a new cycle path from Heath Street to Aberdeen Street, connecting to the new cycle route on Spring Hill
  • upgraded drainage on the highway and across Lee Bridge
  • road layout changes with upgraded carriageway and footway surfaces to support sustainable travel
  • introduction of tidal flow bus lanes on A457 Dudley Road to improve travel times
  • extensive utility works to support the new road layout
  • comprehensive package of landscaping and biodiversity enhancement works
  • safer crossings and side roads for cyclists and pedestrians
  • new traffic signals on Heath Street and Icknield Port junctions

McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd have been appointed to carry out the phase 3 works, with planned completion in Autumn 2025.

Pedestrian management

The northern footway on Lee Bridge between Heath Street and Aberdeen Street is closed from 17 June to 30 September 2024 to facilitate highway and footway improvements.

These works form an important delivery phase of the wider Dudley Road scheme to create better walkways, cycle paths, and roads.

A signed diversion is in place via the southern footway to facilitate pedestrian and cycle access across Lee Bridge.
