If you didn’t know the real story of the ‘Kern Baby’ what would you think of this picture? Would you imagine that this was a monster, a ghost or an alien? What would happen if a ‘Kern Baby’ came to life? There are some great scary stories about figures people have made coming to life – like Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In this story, scientist Victor Frankenstein creates a grotesque being out of dead body parts. The monster just wants to be loved and accepted but turns angry and destructive when Victor rejects him. Weird vintage photographs also make fantastic starting points for stories. Ransom Riggs uses them to illustrate his novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children – a magical, beautiful and terrifying tale of a teenager who goes in search of his dead grandfather’s true story in an abandoned orphanage in Wales.
