Picture of a mummified cat

The Curzon Street cat

Curzon Street Station opened in 1838 and linked Â鶹ÊÓƵ to London for the first time. This cat was discovered at the station during building works. It's not known if the cat was placed there or became trapped during the building of the station.

There is also a mummified cat in the collection of Â鶹ÊÓƵ Museum. This cat is much older than the Curzon Street cat… by about 2,000 years! Egyptians used to mummify animals associated with their gods – cat mummies were found at sites sacred to the cat goddess Bastet.
