Who can apply
A child must have a chaperone if they perform in a theatre, film or television production, or take part in modelling or photography work.
The child's chaperone can be:
- their parent
- their legal guardian
- a licensed chaperone
A licensed chaperone acts in place of the child’s parent or legal guardian. The law says a chaperone should "exercise the care which a good parent might be reasonably expected to give that child."
If you are aged 18 or over and live in the Â鶹ÊÓƵ local authority area, you must be registered and licensed with us if you want to be a voluntary or paid chaperone.

Qualities you need to be a chaperone
You will need to be someone who:
- understands children, their needs and behaviours
- is good at negotiating
- works well in a pressured environment
- is diplomatic when required
