Local and Parliamentary by-elections

A local by election is triggered when a casual vacancy occurs, usually as a result of a resignation, death or disqualification of a councillor.

A parliamentary by-election takes place when a seat in the House of Commons becomes vacant between general elections, again this is usually as a result of a resignation, death or disqualification of an MP.
